“An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge” – Pantone
The ocean – I enjoy looking at it, I don’t enjoy being in it. Why? Oh you know, it’s the little things – drowning, human filth, mysterious creatures of the deep – that keep me landlocked. Need I mention the plight of the Great Barrier Reef? Well, that doesn’t exactly inspire “life-affirming” feelings either now does it? However, let’s not fall under the spell of Negative Nancy – vibrant tropical hues do have a tendency to evoke happiness, right? Living Coral Pantone 16-1546 is no exception. But I’ll let you in on a little not-so-secret-secret – I harbor a bias; I live in mid-century modern Palm Springs, California and am deeply in love with the east coast Miami Vice art deco stylings of Miami. Corals, powdery mints, pastel pinks, creamy yellows – these colors comprise the lifestyle palette of choice in these time capsule cities. If I didn’t love the charming throwback vibe, I wouldn’t be here. How could I possibly naysay a color which is perfectly at home in my life? I can’t. But I’ll be honest, I can’t help but simply give Living Coral a passing glance.
I take all of Pantone’s Color of the Year choices at face value – they aren’t worth the grain of salt to me. Too much pomp, not enough circumstance. But let’s have some fun shall we? Pantone claims that 2019’s color selection is a “reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life…” Which is interesting – insert side-eyed glance here – because Pantone has an active presence on social media platforms but it doesn’t end there “ …we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy”. Hmmm is this why Pantone is constantly attempting to plant itself in our daily lives by shoving their consumer goods down our throats via social media? Again, interesting. Oh make no mistake I myself am a fan of Pantone notepads and mugs as much as the next millennial designer stereotype, but something about their messaging screams “LIES!!” and “HYPOCRISY!!” to me. Lies? Hypocrisy? Woah woah woah let’s reign it aaaaaall the way in. After all, this is a discussion about a color so let’s not get too deep here. In fact I’ll cut this blog post short because while it is certainly an eye pleaser, Living Coral is altogether uninspiring. A good choice? Sure. Forgettable? Absolutely. Pretty but blah. Thanks for another year of fun Pantone, here’s to a colorful 2019.
